Huge fire rips through Perth recycling plant as crews race to battle blaze

FIRE crews have scrambled to an industrial estate in Perth amid an ongoing incident as a huge fire rips through a recycling plant.

Emergency services raced to Friarton Industrial Estate in the city at around 4.50am this morning.

Thick black smoke was seen billowing into the sky for miles from the Recycling Centre.

Flames were seen as they tore through the building while crews with hoses tried to extinguish them.

The Scottish Fire and Rescue Service have confirmed that they are currently on the scene as they fight to extinguish the flames.

Firefighters have been battling the blaze for over seven hours so far.

Six fire appliances and two height appliance were deployed to the scene.

It is currently unclear what has sparked the huge fire.

It is unknown if anyone was injured as a result of the blaze.

A SFRS spokesperson said: “We were alerted to reports of a fire at 4.30am on Sunday 3rd September at recycling centre, Friarton Industrial Estate in Perth.

“Six fire appliances and two height appliances were mobilised to location.

“Crews remain at scene dealing with the incident.”

Elsewhere, police have confirmed that a body has been found during the search for a missing Fife man.

Abertay University lecturer Andrew Samuel, 59, was reported missing on Thursday after he vanished from a remote Scots island.

Police Scotland have confirmed that two arrests were made at Celtic Park in Glasgow yesterday.
